Background
Since October 2016, Helen Keller International (HKI) and Action Against Hunger (AAH) have been running a project called System Enhancement for Transformative Health (SETH) in five counties of Western Kenya (Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Trans-Nzoia, West Pokot). The project aims at strengthening access and demand for maternal and child health and nutrition (MCHN) services. Its focus is on strengthening the health system in each county by working in close collaboration with County and sub county health management teams (CHMT and SCHMT) and ensuring that all activities are embedded within the counties workplans. SETH also focuses on supporting the counties health systems by supporting the daily work of county health management teams.
As part of this support, SETH employed innovative approaches, among which the use of coaching techniques to provide individualized support to key CHMT and SCHMT members. After having been trained on coaching techniques by a professional private company, SETH team members provided coaching sessions to CHMT and SCHMT members over a period of 2 years. Up to 10 SCHMT and CHMT members received coaching session aiming at helping them identify solutions to improve their work performance. Suring this period, a professional coach provided support and supervision to the SETH team on a regular basis.
This approach is seen as very promising by both HKI and AAH, but in order to better understand the impact of the coaching sessions, it is necessary to conduct a rigorous study.
HKI is therefore recruiting a consultant to develop a qualitative research protocol and interview tools, conduct the study, analyze the information collected and write reports and peer reviewed publications.
